q & a
luo wanxiang (L): it looks like a piece of science club homework by some kids?
yan jun (Y): yes indeed. a premier school home work on light refraction and scattering. that light goes through surface of the cd then refracts out. that’s all.
L: do you have anything sentimental to do with these cut-off cd? we both know you have wrote about “the cut-off generation”. that was quite sensational.
Y: i have made some recordings of hundred some cut-off cds rolling on floor. the impulse is i have listened to all my cut-off cd collection by the chance of neatening my studio. some of them i’d through away but couldn’t really do it as there is an emotional connection. i would do something to say goodby to them. so all those emotions and meanings i given to them could be cut away then. now only physical aspect left. it’s about round, cut, rolling plastic pieces.
this refraction and scattering thing is a side product of the recording.
L: but you still emphasized the gap right? light travels through the gap. those two cds were also connected by their gaps.
Y: yes that’s how cut-off is. such tropes as “broken youth” could be replaced by a kind of simple language. thus no more trope, no more symbol as a thing is a thing. thing is like body. now we have a cut on it. that’s all.
L: so is it a piece of visual art work?
Y: good question… anyway it’s not a piece of sound art work. anyway it’s a model, a draft and basic thing.
